Short Film Programs : More Celluloid Experiments

More Celluloid Experiments is a logical progression from Celluloid Experiments, presented last year at Fantasia. You’re invited on journey into the heart of image, sound, clour and movement, a cinematic experience that oscillates between waking dream and psychedelic trip. Some of these shorts present themselves as leaps into moving paintings, others tell their tales with twisted, even surreal logic. In other words, 15 films that push the language of film over the edge.

Left (Alexandre O. Philippe) is a symbolic, poetic and contemplative work of the theme of rupture, a hommage to the American realist painter Andrew Wyeth. Head, shot on 8mm by Montreal’s Dominic Etienne Simard, recalls the finest moments of Stan Brakhage. De l’Amort (Johanna Vaude) samples various film classics to create her own resolutely personal visueal whirlwind. Finkle’s Odyssey (Barney Clay) is a fable about creative inspiration, in a setting that will delight fans of Jeunet & Caro. Radio Kebrle is that strange sort of film only the Czech Republic could produce, a surrealist comedy about lies and the media.

James Higgins’s The Soul Collector connects a series of photos in hypnotic, fascinating stop-motion. Whirr, by Timo Katz, uses the same technique to comment on the architectural repetition in suburban German housing. A Man’s Got To Do What a Man’s Got To Do (Harald Schleicher) is a true tour de force, using samples from numerous vintage movies to reflect on the masculine image put forth in cinema. Jean-Gabriel Périot is one of the most talented video-makers out there now, and we’re proud to presnt three of his recent works, 200 000 Fantômes, Under Twilight and 21.04.02. Caress (Mendel Hardeman) et Tatoo (Genevieve Okupniak) are a sensual pair of shots that explore the fascination with the human body. Hollow (Paul Bickel) is a Lynchian nightmare from the mind of a morbid child.
