Fantasia audiences will remember David Morley as the director of MORSURE, a 13-minute French werewolf film that bowled us over at Fantasia 2008. Now he’s back with his first feature MUTANTS, a refreshing spin on the zombie film that makes its International Premiere on Wednesday July 15th at 7:30pm in the Hall Theatre.
When a zombie virus hits pandemic status, young couple Sonia and Marco flee into isolation to escape the deadly strain – but Marco soon becomes infected and the pregnant Sonia has to defend herself against her slowly mutating lover. As tension builds and mutants close in around the abandoned building they’ve holed up in, the real trauma for Sonia is watching the person she loves transform into a monster – which doesn’t happen instantaneously. It’s a slow, emotionally confusing process. In this sense, MUTANTS explores psychological terrain not often the focus of its cinematic brethren.
The current wave of French horror is brimming with uncompromising talent, and with MUTANTS, David Morley joins the ranks of his countrymen - the people behind such groundbreaking films as INSIDE (2007), FRONTIERE(S) (2007) and MARTYRS (2008).
