Winner of nine awards at the prestigious Hong Kong Film Awards in 2008- including Best Picture and Best Actor for Jet Li – Peter Chan's THE WARLORDS is a stunning $40 million period epic place set amidst one of the darkest eras in Chinese history - the Taiping Rebellion of the 1860s. Based on true events (the same inspiration for the Shaw Brothers' BLOOD BROTHERS), THE WARLORDS brings together Asia's most renowned actors - Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro - as three blood brothers whose bond is shattered by political betrayal and a love triangle.
Li plays General Pang, an ambivalent leader who joins a group of mercenaries headed up by Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro when his own soldiers are killed. The three form a blood bond and their united strength sees Pang rise to power during a time of corruption and political turbulence under the Qing dynasty. But Pang's humanitarian goals turn sour when he becomes power-hungry, and in his quest to eliminate all opposition he massacres 4,000 prisoners of war who his blood-brother Zhao (Andy Lau) had vowed to protect. Part war film, part martial arts film, THE WARLORDS boasts spectacular battle choreography (by Ching Siu-Ting of A CHINESE GHOST STORY and HERO fame) to complement the devastating emotional intrigue.
The film screens on Thursday July 16th at 7:00pm and again Monday July 20th at 3:00pm (both in the Hall Theatre), as part of this year's celebration of Hong Kong Cinema's 100th anniversary, commemorated in the Hong Kong Cinema: 100 Years Spotlight Series - which also includes the films TACTICAL UNIT: COMRADES IN ARMS, COWEB, LEGENDARY ASSASSIN, CRAZY RACER and IP MAN.
