A band of five young girls, led by the defiant Mizuki, commit little misdeeds here and there, doing so with unsettling lightheartedness. By chance they discover the advanced pregnancy of their teacher, Miss Sawako (Aki Miyata). Pushing back against authority, the girls unite to seal a new pact — driving their teacher to a miscarriage.

The title of LET’S-MAKE-THE-TEACHER-HAVE-A-MISCARRIAGE-CLUB is revealing, unsubtly so. However, abandon any notion of a light treatment sliding into exploitation here. Based on true events, it courageously broaches a subject that’s hard to stomach, to even imagine, in exploring the hate hidden among some youths. The teacher must face both parents blind to their progeny’s deviance and an education system with its hands tied. What to do? MISCARRIAGE-CLUB seeks no easy answers, but despite its short running time, it succeeds remarkably in grappling with a complex topic. You won’t come out of it unscathed, but that’s not the point, is it.
