What a Wonderful Family! 2 (" Kazoku wa Tsuraiyo 2")
- 113 mins
- English (subtitles)
Many years have passed since the Hirata family came close to disaster, and things now seem to be back to normal. The elders, Shuzo (Isao Hashizume) and Tomiko (Kazuko Yoshiyuki), are no longer divorcing, and their son Konosuke (Masahiko Nishimura), along with his wife Fumie (Yui Natsukawa) and their kids, still live harmoniously under the same roof. That is, until grandpa acts up again! When the patriarch’s car comes back wrecked from a daily drive around the neighbourhood, the family tries to convince the old man to give up his keys and license. As stubborn as ever, it isn’t long before Shuzo spins this into another family crisis… that only goes from bad to worse when he reunites with former classmates… and rekindles the flame of youth at the neighbourhood bar!
The Hirata family is back! Set a few years after the events of the first film, WHAT A WONDERFUL FAMILY! 2 reunites legendary director Yoji Yamada (NAGASAKI: MEMORIES OF MY SON, the TORA-SAN series) with his exceptional cast (that also includes Yu Aoi and Satoshi Tsumabuki), for a sequel that is not only totally accessible to new viewers, but also bolder and funnier than the first film! A true masterclass in comedy, this is the GREMLINS 2 of multi-generational Japanese slapstick, if you will, and this sequel sees Yamada crank the proverbial knob to 11 and unleash another non-stop barrage of impeccably staged sight gags, comedic misunderstandings and – once again – rare insights into the mores and generational divide of contemporary Japanese society.
