“Has an anger, mystery, and unflinching perspective that makes it stand out… The type of socio-political horror that is both compelling to watch and primed to start debates”

“An eerily fantastic nightmare”
- Tori Danielle, POP HORROR

"One of the hardest hitting attacks on the insanity of the United States' border policy I've ever seen. The film nails what it is like to be not only an immigrant in this country in 2019, but any minority at all, citizenship status be damned."

Is the grass really greener in the Land of the Free? Desperate to start anew “where dreams do come true” and provide a safe haven for her unborn child, Marisol embarks on a perilous trek across the Mexico-United States border — only to realize that the real nightmare wasn’t the journey, but the destination. Trapped in a strange new world of pastel-colored sundresses and neighbourhood pizza extravaganzas, she quickly begins to question her own free will as none of her fellow travelers seem to recognize her, or each other.

From the fierce and independent badass to whimsical, innocent new girl on the block, ALTERED CARBON’s Martha Higareda plays both sides of the fence — or shall we say “the wall” — with just as much moxie. Also featuring the talents of Richard Cabral (AMERICAN CRIME), Shawn Ashmore (X-MEN) and yet another memorable part for festival-favourite Barbara Crampton, CULTURE SHOCK infuses the American Dream with a killer dose of Mexican venom. A true heiress to her famous “Three Amigos” compatriots, Luchagore Productions boss Gigi Saul Guerrero (LA QUINCEAÑERA) returns to Fantasia with a long-awaited feature debut that not only crosses borders, but also pushes the boundaries of genre cinema for both female and Latinx filmmakers. A most appropriately titled thrill-ride, CULTURE SHOCK is produced by Blumhouse Television as part of its Hulu anthology series INTO THE DARK, which comprises twelve monthly installments, each inspired by a popular American holiday and given the signature “Jason Blum” treatment. And what better way to highlight the Fourth of July than with a witty, gritty look into the Central American migrant crisis? – Alyssia Duval-N.
