The dynamic duo of the great Takashi Miike (ICHI THE KILLER) and the brilliant screenwriter Kankuro Kudo (TOO YOUNG TO DIE!) conclude the MOLE SONG trilogy in the best possible way: by surpassing the two previous films, which already caused hysteria at Fantasia!
Something extremely worrying is going on in Italy. The mafia has succeeded in creating a pasta made entirely of methamphetamines: speed-a-ronis. Double agent Reiji Kikukawa, who has infiltrated Japan's most dangerous yakuza clan, is assigned by the Machiavellian Shuo Todoroki, the man he has sworn to arrest, to oversee the largest drug shipment in history. It's the perfect opportunity to send the gang leader to the slammer, but Reiji needs to make as few silly mistakes as possible, which would be a feat in his case, especially after his sweet Juna jilted him for yet another libidinous fling. However, the cruel Leo, Todoroki's heir, messes up the plans of our ostentatious mole, who also has to keep his distance from his "brother”, the fiercely anti-drug yakuza Papillon, to whom he will eventually have to confess his true identity.
To not say that THE MOLE SONG: FINAL is the perfect film to recharge the enthusiasm of the Fantasia audience would merit an immediate intervention from Reiji in nude mode. For those who haven't had the chance to experience the saga's wacky humour and surreal storylines, the madness kicks off with a delirious recap combining kawaii puppets, animation and flashbacks. Takashi Miike has a lot of fun with the grandiloquent universe of Noboru Takahashi's manga, full of dirty jokes, dazzlingly kitschy decor, and larger-than-life characters. The stellar cast is led by Tomas Ikuta, who outdoes himself with an absolutely hilarious physical performance. The consumption of speed-a-ronis is strongly discouraged because of the hallucinatory finale, one that will stick with you for a long time. – Translation: Rupert Bottenberg
