“Nonstop thrills... instills interest and deep curiosity to see where this insanely bloody, wild saga goes next”- Meagan Navarro, BLOODY DISGUSTING
Amid the horrifying carnage in an isolated research facility that has been the target of a violent raid, a single survivor opens her eyes. The girl, barefoot and blood-smeared, walks out of the concrete bunker, through the woods, and into the difficult life of Kyung-hee. The young woman is trying to hold onto her family farmland, despite the predations of local crook Yong-doo. The girl seems strangely naive, unfamiliar with the world, but has taken a liking to Kyung-hee and her brother Dae-gil. So when Yong-doo and his henchmen lean a little too hard on her new friends, she calmly unleashes a flash of violence far beyond normal human capabilities. The event does not go unnoticed, and soon more than one group with dark plans for the mysterious girl are closing in. These agents of unseen forces will not be so easily dissuaded from their goals.
After an excruciating wait, at last, THE WITCH: PART 2. THE OTHER ONE
slams into the Fantasia screen with bone-shattering force! The South Korean saga of transgressive science, superpowered, psychokinetic teenage sociopaths, and a secret organization fractured into lethally hostile factions expands the scope and accelerates the alarming hyper-violence that made its predecessor, 2018’s PART 1. THE SUBVERSION
, such a smash hit at Fantasia (and earning its star, Kim Da-mi, our Best Actress Award that year!). The plot certainly thickens in this sequel—with every revelation about the Ark, the twin Baek sisters, and the web of inhuman warriors in the shadows, more intriguing questions arise. The first film set a new standard for teen superhero movies, and this new jolt of horror, action, and thrills only raises that bar. – Rupert Bottenberg
