“A splatterpunk action comedy drenched in gleefully dark Russian humor… smarter and wittier than its pulpy setup initially seems to suggest”

With a hammer clutched behind his back and a quick prayer under his breath, Matiev makes his fateful decision and pushes the apartment’s doorbell. He comes face to face for the first time with Andrei, his girlfriend Olya’s dad and a brutish-looking Moscow cop to boot. Their little get-to-know-you breakfast chat bristles with insinuations of violence, and before coffee can reach the table, subtext is dispensed with, and all holy household hell breaks loose. A near-miss shotgun blast reveals a stash of cash in the wall, but that’s not the most shocking secret that will be revealed before this homebound showdown comes to its crimson conclusion.

Nobody’s walking out of Russian filmmaker Kirill Sokolov’s attention-grabbing debut feature without a heapin’ helping of hurt. Not its five hellbound players in a single, ever more battle-scarred Moscow apartment, and not the audience either. Sokolov isn’t shy about sharing from whence he cometh, echoing Tarantino and Raimi, early Coens and with in-your-face trumpet flourishes, classic Leone. Charging ahead at full throttle, though, he soon enough shows his own sure-footed synthesis of suspense, drama, dark comedy, and deranged, detail-oriented ultraviolence. It’s all expressed in that bemusing Russian syntax — not “laugh till it hurts” but rather “hurts so bad ya gotta laugh” — and with the cool timing and emphasis of a seasoned jazz drummer. Sokolov is ruthlessly deliberate in his decisions, be it the pressure-cooker dialogue, the cunning camera work, or the piquant colour scheme, and with WHY DON’T YOU JUST DIE!, he demands his spot on the ones-to-watch-out-for list. – Rupert Bottenberg
