A legendary curator, historian and critic, Los Angeles author Heidi Honeycutt co-founded the Etheria film Festival and has written for a vast number of books, magazines and websites, from Filmmaker, Moviemaker and Indiewire to Bloody Disgusting, Rue Morgue and Famous Monsters of Filmland. In the midst of her many public endeavours, Honeycutt has been working on a definitive, labour-of-love publication. One that’s taken 20 years of labour and a lifetime of research to bring into light.

Fantasia is proud to be hosting the World Premiere book launch of Heidi Honeycutt’s I SPIT ON YOUR CELLULOID: THE HISTORY OF WOMEN DIRECTING HORROR MOVIES (Headpress Books), a comprehensive work that covers the evolution of women in horror cinema from 1896 to the present day.

SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE. PET SEMATARY. NEAR DARK. AMERICAN PSYCHO… These movies have heavily contributed to pop culture and are loved by fans everywhere. But so many others have been forgotten by history. From the first silent reels to modern independent films, in this book you’ll discover the creepy, horrible, grotesque, beautiful, wrong, good, and fantastic—and the one thing they share in common: this is the true history of women directing horror movies.

Having conducted hundreds of interviews and watched thousands of horror films over the last 20 years, Heidi Honeycutt defines the political and cultural forces that shape the way modern horror movies are made by women. I SPIT ON YOUR CELLULOID is a first-of-its-kind celebration, study, and “a book that needed to be written” (says cult filmmaker Stephanie Rothman).

Fantasia’s official book launch will be taking place on Friday, July 26, after a special screening of Christina Hornisher’s once-thought-lost 1974 horror gem HOLLYWOOD 90028, the Canadian Premiere of Grindhouse Releasing’s new 4K restoration.

Honeycutt will introduce the screening and advance copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.

In addition, on the following afternoon, Saturday, July 27. Honeycutt will be leading HER HORROR LEGACY, a special panel discussion with an array of female filmmakers attending this year’s festival, which you won’t want to miss.
