South Korean cinema has always offered a rewarding moviegoing experience, and following successes like Bong Joon-ho’s big wins at Cannes and the Oscars for 2019’s PARASITE, cinephiles have started paying a lot more attention to Korean films. Fantasia’s inaugural edition of the CineMapsosa program showcases the qualities of South Korean genre cinema with a quartet of mid-length films by incredibly talented emerging directors who aren’t afraid to take risks and push the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. From science-fiction drama to psychological thriller, the possibilities are endless. “Mapsosa” is a way of saying “Oh my god!” in Korean, a response these filmmakers and their works are guaranteed to elicit from their appreciative audience. – Steven Lee
