Cinéma Moderne

You have a rendezvous with shapes, colours, and poetry on a celluloid journey that takes you all the way from sweet daydreams to feverish nightmares. An experimental film is a project that goes against the grain and pushes the medium in unexplored directions. These 32 shorts and micro-shorts will convince you that the fringe of cinema is alive and well, offering original visions from the four corners of the globe — Germany, Belgium, South Korea, Spain, the United States, France, Greece, Hong Kong and, of course, Canada. You'll discover eight singular works as world premieres, two international premieres, two North American premieres and three Canadian premieres. These include POPPY'S SATURN by Frank & Nicole, MY TRIP TO EARTH by Izzy Lee, HYBERNIA by Max Shoham, THE CONSCIOUS "I" by Choi Yeoleum, UNE JOURNÉE by Daphnée Leduc-Laprise, MEMETRO by Seo Chaeyoung, STRANGE GARDEN by Oh Jeongmin, MOTO MARINE / WATERCRAFT by Gabriel Auclair-Doucet, and ZAPPING IN SPACE, a collaboration between TIND & DJ XL5. This programme is co-produced with Montreal's Dérapage festival, a unique audiovisual exploration event created in 2000, which each year invites people from all disciplines to create a non-narrative audiovisual short film with sound. Eighteen shorts or micro-shorts featured in this programme are from the 2024 Dérapage vintage. The full programme is available on our website. – Translation: Rupert Bottenberg
