Since his Oscar-nominated 1988 short film YOUR FACE, award-winning American independent animation icon Bill Plympton has been a consistently reliable source of hand-drawn animated wit and weirdness, including the feature films THE TUNE, HAIR HIGH, CHEATIN’ and his most recent, SLIDE. If you’re fond of B-movie science fiction, cartoons that are decidedly not for kids, and/or general freakazoid fun, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the 2001 feature film MUTANT ALIENS, among the more uproariously bizarre creations from Plympton’s twisted mind and fevered drawing hand. If you have, however, we guarantee you’ve never seen (or heard) it like this.

MUTANT ALIENS is the tale of astronaut Earl Jensen, abandoned in outer space by his boss at the Department of Space. Jensen eventually returns to Earth, recounting his encounters with (you guessed it) mutant aliens, but there’s a devilish secret behind his solitary extraterrestrial exploits. Any further revelations might spoil the fun, but it bears mentioning that Plympton’s work, and this film in particular, are enormously appreciated by the two musicians in PanaCello. They’ve chosen this film, with great enthusiasm, for their contribution to this summer’s Ciné-Concert series at la SAT, and the weirdos at Fantasia couldn’t concur more wholeheartedly, hence the festival’s co-presentation of the event. PanaCello is Pierre-Olivier Bolduc, percussionist and handpan master (as well as a didgeridoo-maker, at his Cigales Instruments workshop), joining cellist Juliette Malgrange. An unlikely, and thus suitably weird and delightful, pairing, perfect for the conjuration of an entirely new, original, and otherworldly musical accompaniment to Plympton’s animated space oddity! – Rupert Bottenberg

Mutant Aliens is screened outside for free.
The activity will take place at Parc de la Paix located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, between Sainte-Catherine and René-Lévesque streets.
