Many women experience menstruation, and a girl’s first period can be new and strange to her. For one teenage girl, what is at first a rite of passage to becoming a woman becomes an awakening, making her realize that she has a hunger that comes along with her biological functions. Olivia Locciano’s debut short, FIRST BLOOD, takes body horror and pushes the extremes of normalizing bodily functions, taking festivals by storm and provoking conversations about the misconceptions of periods, what they look like, and what they can represent. – Carolyn Mauricette
